HARTFIELD VOLUNTEER
FIRE DEPARTMENT

Our History

In the early 1960's, 7 gentlemen from the Hartfield area saw the need for a satellite branch from the Deltaville Volunteer Fire Department due to the size of the area. These 7 men, with help from their families, were committed to providing fire protection for the area in which they lived. In 1963, they went door to door to raise funds for this need. With these funds, they were able to buy a half-acre of marshland and began a double bay building project. With the help of many other people who contributed their time clearing land, hauling dirt, driving nails, and laying block, the building was completed in 1964. After the fire department was built, a 1947 Chevy was stationed in the building. This was a temperamental pumper, a bear to prime, and had to be jump-started. In the late 60's the need arose for more water capability when first responding to a call. The members of the department converted an old gasoline tanker to a water tanker.

In 1977, the Hartfield satellite station separated from Deltaville and became its own department. Also, in the late 70’sa surplus jeep with a front-mounted pump was added as a brush truck. In the early 80’s two more bays were addedto make room for the addition of a used pumper with jump seats in 1984 and a used Ward-LaFrance pumper in thelate 80’s.

The department continued to upgrade in the 1990’s with a new pumper and tanker. With auto accidents increasing, the fire department built its own crash truck and expanded the building with 2 more bays. In 2001 the custom-builttruck was replaced by a new 1000-gallon crash truck.

In the spring of 2018, the department purchased an E-One custom cab engine with updated safety features and seating for six firefighters.

We are now actively serving the Hartfield area of Virginia, and providing on call assistance to

Deltaville, Urbanna, and Water View areas of Middlesex County as well.
